Clockmakers and Watchmakers of Lancaster County by Stacy B.C. Wood, Jr.
This very interesting and informative 75 page book takes a comprehensive look at the makers of mechanical timepieces in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. From the Introduction: "Mechanical timepieces occupy a unique place in the material culture of human history. Aside from their beauty and purpose as precision instruments for telling time, clocks and watches frequently establish the 'social status' of their owners. The tall case clock was to be found only in the homes of substantial residents; it bespoke stability, refinement, and a love of the beautiful. Possession of a good watch marked its owner as a person of discernment. Makers of clocks and watches took much pride in their craftsmanship, and were known by the quality of their products. Unlike other mechanical devices, the clock was found usually in the place of honor in the well-ordered home. In the parlors and drawing rooms of aristocrats, the clock often was part of a group of fine furniture; it had to be as elegant and handsome as other pieces in the setting. And it had to keep good time, a goal of every clockmaker worthy of his name." Through text and photos the author gives a detailed biography of dozens of Lancaster County clock makers and their products, using extensive research provided by the Lancaster County Historical Society.
